My husband was diagnosed with Stage 4 throat cancer in July and underwent a very difficult treatment of combined radiation and chemotherapy. During the process of the 35 radiation treatments we saw and met many patients going through similar treatment. It became very clear to us that getting through cancer treatment is far more difficult for those with limited financial resources. During throat cancer treatment the patient is limited to a liquid diet, because of the pain and difficulty in swallowing. We were able to purchase a Vitamix blender to use for smoothies. We cannot imagine how someone could get by without a blender of some sort. We were able to purchase (only available online) throat sprays to help with pain. Protein powder, cocoa butter lotion, hydration tablets, high caloric BOOST, hand sanitizer, all of these items are complete necessities. They are also expensive.
Our goal is to help those less fortunate to get through this horrible course of treatment. Our plan is to give a take home care package with many of the above items, for those patients who demonstrate need and are going through a similar course of treatment. We want something positive to come out of our experience. These items can be difficult to find in stores, some available online only - the plan is to ease the burden for these patients as best we can. We have met with the hospital social worker and nutritionist to solidify how we will get the most essential products to the patients who are in need. They also told us that in the time they've worked at the hospital no patient has ever decided to give back. It is so easy to go inwards negatively when faced with something as terrible as cancer. Our hope is that we give patients and their family one less thing to worry about by providing these soothing products. We have two daughters age 21 and 14. They have been involved every step of the way and we plan to fund raise for this so we can carry this giving on as a family for years to come. We need a NAME!!! Can you help?
